Find a Notary
Notary services may be easier to find than you think! Consider some of the easy (and often free) options below.

People are sometimes surprised that access to notaries may be closer and easier than they realize. You possibly already have a relationship with an organization that provides easy, quick, and oftentimes free notary service. While I do enjoy being able to provide notary services, my schedule is very limited. Below are common places to find notary service before requesting an appointment.
Public Library
The public library usually has notaries on staff or who are volunteers. However, not every public library has notaries and those who do may not have a notary on duty or available every day. Please call ahead to confirm if a notary is available. The phone numbers for the Timbrook library (CCPL) and the main libraries in the Lynchburg area are:
Timbrook Branch, CCPL (434) 592-9551
Campbell County Public Library (434) 332-9560
Lynchburg City Public Library (434) 455-6300.
Bedford County Public Library (540) 586-8911
Amherst County Public Library (434) 946-9488
Your Bank or Credit Union
Almost every bank and credit union has at least one notary on staff to provide services as a courtesy to their banking customers. As with the public library, not every bank has a notary on staff and those who do may not have a notary available every day, so please call ahead and check with your bank to see if and when a notary is available to you.
Your Employer or School
You or your spouse/partner’s employer may have a notary on staff (usually in the executive, legal, accounting, or HR departments). While these notaries typically only perform duties for the employer’s needs, they may be able to provide one-time notary services to their employees. If you’re attending or work at a college or university, your “Student Services Center” may also provide notary services as a courtesy to their students or employees. Call and check with the appropriate department for information.
(Note: You may be able to use notary services that are intended for students or employees of a Virginia public university or college, even if you are in no way affiliated with that institution, provided you are a tax-paying Virginia resident. Feel free to call and check with the Student Services Center or other similar department of a school in your area to see if they offer services to unaffiliated Virginia residents.)
Circuit Court Clerk
Some court clerk offices have staff who can provide notary services during regular business hours and/or by appointment. Offering notary service is at the discretion of each individual clerk. Not every jurisdiction’s clerk has this service available, so it is recommended you call the clerk’s office in your jurisdiction to inquire.
(Note: You do not necessarily have to be a resident of any particular jurisdiction to use their court clerk’s office, so if your jurisdiction’s clerk doesn’t provide notary services you can check with the clerk of a neighboring jurisdiction).
Campbell County Circuit (434) 332-9517
Lynchburg City Circuit (434) 455-2620
Bedford County Circuit (540) 586-7632
Amherst County Circuit (434) 946-9321
Office & Shipping Stores
Some area office supply or shipping stores have notaries on staff and may or may not charge the statutory notary fee. As with libraries and banks, not every location has a notary and those who do may not have a notary available every day. Please call ahead to inquire about notary services and their hours of availability.
Other Commercial Businesses
Sometimes, you can find notaries in the most unlikely places! Some of the more surprising places to find notaries include: used car dealers, towing companies, garages & mechanics, title loan companies, churches, realtors, mortgage brokers and real estate title agents, and even doctors offices, dentists, and hospitals. If you’re not in a hurry, it might be a fun activity to just call around and discover who does and doesn’t provide notary services. If you find an unlikely business in the Lynchburg area that does provide notary services, please reach out and let me know so that I can provide this information to others in the future.
Notary Rotary
This website lists notaries from around the country that have created (and maintain at least every 6 months) public profiles offering their services as a notary. While not all of the notaries listed here offer mobile services, many of them do. You may click here to search for registered notaries in your area. (Note: Although I am a registered member of Notary Rotary, no endorsement of their website, directory, or any of the notaries found there should be inferred. Likewise, Notary Rotary does not endorse me or any other notaries listed in their directory.)
