While there are many places to obtain free notary service in Virginia, most private and mobile notaries charge a fee for providing service to the public. The amount a notary may charge for performing a notarial act is determined by statute, however, the law also provides for notaries to be reimbursed for their actual and reasonable expenses. These additional fees are usually the form of travel fees and fees paid for other non-notarial services. Below is my current listing of fees as well as a “Fee Calculator” that you can use to estimate how much I will charge you for notary service.

Notarial Fee Effective as of July 1, 2024

The Code of Virginia (§ 47.1-19) dictates the maximum amount a notary may charge for their services. As of July 1, 2024, the maximum amount allowed by law per notarial act performed is $10.00. A notary is not required to charge a fee for their services and there are many places such as public libraries and banks where you can receive notarial service without any charge.

I charge the full amount allowed under Virginia law ($10.00). This fee is “per notarial act,” meaning, each time I affix my seal, it constitutes a separate notarial act and thus a separate fee. This is to be paid by cash, credit/debit card, or contactless payment and will be collected before I perform my duties.

When a customer uses credit/debit card or contactless payment (such as Apple Pay or Google Wallet), the customer can enter their email address in the payment terminal to have a receipt emailed to them. Upon request, I will provide a paper receipt of fees paid for cash customers only.

In addition to the statutory notarial fee, you may also be charged for travel fees or printing service fees (if you so choose).

Travel Fee Schedule Effective as of February 1, 2024

Travel fees are primarily assessed based on time and not distance. The time is calculated using the average or estimated travel time according to Google Maps directions from my “home base” to your chosen appointment destination.

The below schedule was created with an estimation of 7.5 miles per 10 minutes and is defined by total travel distance in minutes one-way (the return travel time is already calculated into the fee). The travel fee accounts for fuel, vehicle wear, and an expense that includes the monetary value of time spent traveling*, which becomes premium after hours and on holidays. “Regular Hours” are defined as between 10am and 6pm Monday through Friday.

While you can use the schedule below to estimate travel fees assessed for your appointment, ultimately the calculation of travel fees is at my discretion. When a travel fee applies, the travel fee will be stated and must be agreed upon by both parties via email or in writing before an appointment is scheduled.

Distance (in Minutes)< 10 Min10-20 Min20-30 Min30-40 Min40-50 Min50-60 Min
Regular Hours$0$20$40$60$80$100
After Hours$10$30$50$75$100$125
Holidays$20$60$100$150$200$250

* Monetary value of time is only for traveling. Notaries may not charge for their time performing their duties and such time is never factored into the travel fees. Whether an appointment takes me 5 minutes or 2 hours, the only money I can accept for performing my duty itself is the statutory maximum.

Prepayment & Travel-Fee Refund Policy

Effective July 4, 2024

For travel greater than 20 minutes one-way, travel fees must be prepaid and are non-refundable within 4 hours of the appointment time or unless the appointment is cancelled by me for personal or scheduling reasons.

Travel fees are never refundable when I terminate an appointment for cause (including, but not limited to: violating my conduct policy, not providing a safe environment for notarial service to be performed, or not satisfactorily proving your identity).

In the event that you cancel an appointment for which travel fees have been prepaid, your travel fees will be refunded provided the cancellation request is received and acknowledged more than 4 hours prior to the appointment time. In this event, a $5 administration fee will be deducted from the refund to help offset scheduling and processing expenses.

Additional Fees Effective as of February 1, 2024

Purchase of Forms

With the exception of complimentary loose certificates, when required or requested and when appropriate, I do not provide nor sell any forms or legal documents.

Copies of Notarized Documents

I do not provide a copying service for documents I have notarized. If you require copies of notarized documents (i.e., copies of advanced directives, powers of attorney, etc.) it would be better for you to schedule your appointment in a location that provides you access to a copy machine or scanner so that you can make copies before I staple the original document together.

Printing Services

It is generally preferred that documents being notarized NOT be printed using inkjet printers.

If requested, I can print your documents using a laser printer before our appointment. I will only be printing your documents, not proofing or reviewing them.

To arrange for me to print your documents, you will need to request this service when setting up your appointment. Your document will need to be in PDF format and will need to be uploaded to a reputable sharing service (i.e., Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, etc.) and the link to your document provided to me (please, do not email your document to me). You will state how many copies of the document you want printed (it is always advised to have at least one additional copy incase of mistakes made by the signer or the notary). Documents to be notarized should always be printed single-sided, therefore I will not offer duplex printing.

You will pay for each page printed, including duplicate copies, whether or not they are used. The fees for printing services are:

  • Base Fee: $3.50
  • 20lb paper: 12¢ per page
  • 24lb paper: 22¢ per page (subject to paper availability)

Your document will be printed in black & white / greyscale only. 24lb paper is a premium weight paper and is usually unnecessary, although may be desirable when printing “will & testaments” or any more-formal documents. You also may wish to request 24lb paper if you are also requesting that I use a raised/embossed notary seal.

Please note that if paying in cash, I only accept exact change (and you may not “round up”). You will want to confirm the total amount due before our appointment and/or use a credit/debit or contactless payment method.

In all cases, the signer (client) accepts responsibility for the accuracy, formatting, and completeness of any documents they have notarized or submit for filing. Whether a document is provided by a third-party, self-printed by the signer, printed at a public library or commercial provider, or printed by me, you are responsible for reviewing and ensuring the documents are correct. Neither I nor any other entity will be responsible for mistakes due to printing errors and no refunds or complimentary reprints will be offered.

Use the below calculator to estimate the total fees including statutory notarial fees, travel fees, and supplies (if applicable).

Note: Choose the travel distance in minutes one-way. The return travel time is already accounted for in the travel schedule.
